Grand Center Arts Academy Near Opening

Work is nearing completion for the Grand Center Arts Academy, which will open late this month in Grand Center as a performing and visual arts charter school.
A ribbon cutting is set for Aug. 17 at the school, which is in the Beaux Arts building across North Grand Boulevard from Powell Hall. Principal Lynne Glickert, teachers, staffers, students and parents are expected to attend. Classes are scheduled to begin Aug. 22.
Lawrence Group, headed by Steve Smith, is the project’s developer. The charter school sponsored by St. Louis University fills the two-building, seven-story complex, which had once been the headquarters of Carter Carburetor Co.
Considering the poor state of the construction industry, times are good in Grand Center, at least as far as building projects go. In addition to the arts academy, construction is underway on the new home of KWMU-FM and the Metropolitan apartments, by Dominium Development of Minneapolis.
In addition, work is about to begin on the new Grand Center home of KDHX. And Grand Center officials hope that by the end of the year they will have an agreement for a hotel development at the Missouri Theater building.
