Genesis Promise Academy Charter School Celebrates Multiple Accomplishments
It has been a great few weeks of accomplishments for the students and staff of Genesis Promise Academy in Kansas City. The school recently celebrated the opening of their new library and their Executive Director has been recognized for her service to students in the Kansas City community.
On Thursday, December 8, the Genesis School unveiled its new resource and media library for the students and the surrounding community in a grand opening celebration. Kansas City Mayor Sly James, a former board president of the school, and Genesis Executive Director Pamela Pearson cut the red ribbon and officially opened the doors to the new library. The ribbon cutting was followed by a warm, heartfelt reception for students, parents, staff and supporters whose hard work made this great new resource possible for the Genesis Promise Academy family.
The opening celebration also was an opportunity for the community and other organizations to contribute to the Genesis holiday book drive so that the staff could fill the new shelves with new and gently used books for its students. Genesis is working in cooperation with the Kansas City Library so that every child and parent will have there own library card and access to the downtown location.
Also, it was recently announced that Pearson is being recognized for her work with the school. Pearson has been selected by the United Minority Media Association to receive a ‘Time Well Spent’ award. She will be formally recognized at the Tribute to MLK, Time Well Spent and Membership Drive Reception. The event will be held on Friday, January 27, 2012 at Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Blue Parkway in Kansas City, Missouri from 5:00p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
The Missouri Charter Public School Association congratulates both Genesis and Pearson on these recent achievements.
MCPSA Statement on Imagine Schools Closures and Probation
The Missouri Charter Public School Association (MCPSA) recognizes Missouri Baptist University’s diligence in evaluating the Imagine schools they sponsor and holding the schools accountable for their results. The role of accountability in Missouri’s charter schools lies with the sponsor and this is an important step taken by Missouri Baptist University to enforce their sponsorship role.
Regarding the closing of Imagine Academy of Academic Success and Imagine Academy of Cultural Arts, the process should now begin to make sure that the schools are closed responsibly, keeping the best interests of the students foremost in mind. The Association will seek to work with both the sponsor and schools to develop a closure plan and see that the students are able to make a smooth transition to a high quality school.
The four Imagine schools that are being placed on probation should continue to be monitored as planned with the same diligence that has gone into this initial round of school reviews and continue to be held accountable for their academic results and operational management. The findings in the first round of reviews are troubling and substantiate the Association’s concerns about Imagine Schools, Inc. publicly expressed over the last few months. These schools must make the significant improvements laid out in the plans immediately or additional accountability measures should be taken.
The Missouri Charter Public School Association will continue to be a resource for both Missouri Baptist University and the Imagine schools as this process moves forward.
