St. Louis Language Immersion School Participates in Missouri Read-in Day

Students and staff at St. Louis Language Immersion Schools participated in Missouri Read- in Day on Friday, March 9 with the school’s students participating in the school’s Raz-Kids.com reading program.

This motivational reading program is an interactive online program with animated books and has been an at home reading program for students in the school since last November.  Through this program the students listen, read, record, take quizzes and receive vocabulary and pronunciation support appropriate for their reading level.  Students are highly motivated and engaged with the reading and are excited to learn and perform through the program.  Parents also support this program by encouraging their children to read at home.

As an added perk to the program, completing books allows students to earn points and the classes with the most points earn a party. Also, the individual students with the most points at end of the month win a lunch with the Head of School, and a free book. Kids who actively participate in the program are rewarded at the end of the year with a trip to Splash City Water Park at the end of the school year.

Missouri Read- in Day was established by the State Legislature during the 2011 session as the second Friday in March.  Missouri Read- in Day recommends that the day be observed through activities that will encourage greater emphasis on reading at home and at school.  The observation can help people statewide recognize that reading proficiency is a major factor in determining a child’s success in school.

 

Frontier School of Excellence Celebrates Multiple Achievements

Over the weekend, Frontier Schools of Excellence students brought home multiple awards in two different competitions.

Frontier Schools are offering Turkish as a foreign language along with Spanish and French. Two Frontier students attended preliminary rounds of Southwest America Turkish Olympiad finals. One of them, Makenna Lockhart, received a bronz medal in her category.  Another student, Michael Cox, received a silver medal in his category.

Also, recently, twelve students of Frontier School of Excellence participated at the 8th Annual Youth Technology Fair “Pathway to STEM” Exhibition on Saturday, Feb. 18th.  First place winners of both middle school and high school divisions are among FSE students who presented their projects at the Southeast Community Center yesterday. In fact, top three placement awards in senior division all went to Frontier students. Congratulations are in order to these students for their hard work and FSE science and math department for their dedication and support.  The names of the winners are:

1st place: Malek Looner (7th grader at FSE)

Senior Division:
1st place: Richard Cole (Sophomore at FSE)
2nd place: Victoria Cole (Freshman at FSE)
3rd place: Nadeem Vora (Sophomore at FSE)

Gateway Science Academy Community Breakfast Highlights Fall 2011

Gateway Science Academy hosted their first annual community awareness breakfast on December 8, 2011.  The event was a huge success and was attended by many of the school’s parents as well as local elected officials and other community leaders.  Check out Gateway Science Academy’s fall 2011 newsletter below for more details on this event, as well as the other great things going on at the school.

Genesis Promise Academy Charter School Celebrates Multiple Accomplishments

It has been a great few weeks of accomplishments for the students and staff of Genesis Promise Academy in Kansas City.  The school recently celebrated the opening of their new library and their Executive Director has been recognized for her service to students in the Kansas City community.

On Thursday, December 8, the Genesis School unveiled its new resource and media library for the students and the surrounding community in a grand opening celebration. Kansas City Mayor Sly James, a former board president of the school, and Genesis Executive Director Pamela Pearson cut the red ribbon and officially opened the doors to the new library.   The ribbon cutting was followed by a warm, heartfelt reception for students, parents, staff and supporters whose hard work made this great new resource possible for the Genesis Promise Academy family.

The opening celebration also was an opportunity for the community and other organizations to contribute to the Genesis holiday book drive so that the staff could fill the new shelves with new and gently used books for its students. Genesis is working in cooperation with the Kansas City Library so that every child and parent will have there own library card and access to the downtown location.

Also, it was recently announced that Pearson is being recognized for her work with the school.  Pearson has been selected by the United Minority Media Association to receive a ‘Time Well Spent’ award.  She will be formally recognized at the Tribute to MLK, Time Well Spent and Membership Drive Reception. The event will be held on Friday, January 27, 2012 at Bruce R. Watkins Cultural Heritage Center, 3700 Blue Parkway in Kansas City, Missouri from 5:00p.m. until 8:30 p.m.
